ScanPod3D Orthopedic 3D Scanners Review

Good day!

Today we will tell you about orthopedic 3D scanners from the ScanPod3D brand.

More a wide range of tools for creating a customized offer.

ScanPod3D company specializes in the production of additive equipment for orthopedics. The line of leg scanners currently includes 6 models: from a small USOL one-leg scanner weighing less than 5 kg to the more advanced UPOD-HD with FULL HD image resolution.

In this review, we will tell you more about 3 models of 3D scanners of this brand: USOL, UPOD-S and UPOD-HD.

They belong to different price categories and are tailored for different tasks.

All of the above models create an accurate color or monochrome 3D image of the foot, which can be further worked with in the proprietary software. All of them scan legs with varying degrees of load: with full, partial and no load, which allows the orthopedist to make a more accurate diagnosis of the patient and make appropriate recommendations.

Now more about each of them …

USOL

It is the smallest scanner available, weighing only 4.7 kg. It features good speed, portable size and budget price. One foot is scanned at a time, but there is also a USOL-DUO model that can scan 2 feet at the same time.

The front panel features a vertical laser-cut plank that helps align the foot and ankle. At the back is a small, foldable heel chamber.

The scanner can also be used vertically using a special tripod.

The USOL’s scanning speed is even higher than that of its counterparts, at 2.9 seconds (1.9 seconds for high-speed scanning).

The platform can carry up to 180 kg.

The scanning height is 80 mm, which is significantly lower than other models. Therefore, this scanner is more designed to create individual orthopedic insoles for shoes.

UPOD-S

The UPOD-S is a fairly compact device weighing only 10 kg with a laconic design, which is designed to 3D scan one leg at a time.

The maximum weight load on the scanner platform is 130 kg, which is 50 kg less than the USOL and UPOD-HD.

Scan area size: 330mm × 130mm × 115mm. Height 115mm allows you to scan the leg from foot to ankle. But the scanning speed is slightly higher than that of USOL – 3.2 seconds in one direction.

To create the necessary blackout during operation, a white plastic cover plate with a recess and a comfortable silicone edging for the leg is provided. No additional shading or shielding is required.

There is a scanning sensor on the top of the scanner that blinks blue during operation.

At the back there are connectors for connecting to the power supply, a computer, a power button, camera indicators and places for fixing a stand with a monitor.

Inside the scanner looks like this:

On all sides there are diode strips for illumination of the scanned object, there are also 3 cameras inside: right, left and central.

Thanks to its high scanning height, the scope of the scanner is expanding and the UPOD-S can be used for both insoles and shoes.

UPOD-HD

This is the most expensive scanner in the lineup. This is because it is highly accurate and allows you to scan your feet in Full HD. The scanning error is only 0.5 mm (for fellows – 0.1 mm).

Also, UPOD-HD has a very large scanning area – 380x180x180 mm. This model is ideal for making shoe lasts. The maximum weight load is 180 kg.

UPOD-HD looks more clumsy compared to other models, but you can see that it is assembled very soundly.

The scanning speed is slightly higher than that of previous models – at least 5.9 seconds.

Left scan HD, right – no HD:

The images show that the difference is quite significant and if filigree accuracy is required, this is the best option.

Equipment

The package bundle for USOL, UPOD-S and UPOD-HD is almost identical: power adapter, foot switch, foot steps, USB cable, license key.

The UPOD-S also has shipping keys. And UPOD-HD comes with a NUC – a mini-PC from Intel with the necessary system requirements.

The photo shows the complete set of the UPOD-S scanner

For ease of use and to create a uniform load during operation, the kit provides two steps for the legs on each side of the scanner with special mounts for reliable fixation. They are flush with the scanning platform and the legs are flush in their natural position during scanning.

Working with scanners and their capabilities

To get started, the first thing you need to do with UPOD-S is to remove the shipping key from the slot, which protects the mechanism from damage during transportation.

Next, the standard calibration of the scanner is carried out.

It is performed automatically through the supplied software and does not take much time.

You can start a scan session either through the software interface or using a convenient foot switch included in the kit.

To work with USOL and UPOD-S scanners, no complicated additional equipment is required, the technical requirements are quite standard. UPOD-HD has higher system requirements, so the manufacturer took care of its users and put a mini-PC with the necessary parameters in the kit with the scanner.

All scanners have a nuance – they connect to a computer only with the Windows 10 operating system. Scanners do not work with other operating systems.

For UPOD-S, you can additionally order a monitor, mini-PC and a high stand for their location, which is mounted to the scanner. The stand has universal mounting holes, you can attach any other monitor to it.

ScanPod3D scanners compare favorably with analogs on the market, the ability to capture both color and monochrome textures of images while maintaining full scan speed at a good level with very little printing error.

The ability to display the color texture of images allows you to get more information and more accurately identify areas of deviation from the norm. The scan results are displayed in full size.

Software

The scanners use proprietary multifunctional software as software. It provides a wide range of functions and parameters for diagnostics and analysis.

The resulting images can be rotated, resized, displayed texture, carried out up to 43 different measurements, as well as compared images of both feet both at the current moment and in dynamics.

The software automatically diagnoses the arch of the foot, big toe and heel based on the geometry of the feet. The functions provide for the automatic generation of reports on the results of work in PDF format.

A number of functions have been developed to create individual orthopedic shoes and insoles.

It is possible to scan not only the foot, but also the impression and the pads.

You can also customize RX molds to make custom insoles or shoes.

Scan results can be saved and exported in various formats: STL, WRX, JPG, PNG and CSV.

The software comes with open source and advanced programming capabilities.

The system of integration with databases has been simplified. In addition, it is possible to customize it under your own brand and encrypt the scanner data for security.

Outcome

In the review, we presented you 3 models of ScanPod3D brand scanners for different tasks in 3 price categories.

The most budgetary and compact USOL scanner for 320,000 rubles. If you don’t need HD fidelity and are comfortable with a lower scan height, this scanner is ideal. It is primarily intended for making insoles.

More expensive UPOD-HD for 890,000 rubles. Mainly used to design shoe lasts or custom shoes. It provides the highest quality 3D images and a large scanning area, which are its main advantages over its counterparts.

UPOD-S scanner for 650,000 rubles. can be called the golden mean both in price and in terms of the possibilities offered. It can be used for making insoles, and for creating orthopedic, sports and any other specialized footwear.

All 3 models are professional instruments for orthopedic scanning and provide huge functionality. They are very easy to learn and operate, have a reliable design, high scanning speed. The proprietary ScanPod3D software deserves special attention, as it provides the widest range of functions and capabilities.

Scanners are good options for both medical and custom orthopedic insoles and footwear applications. They will be central to the design and creation of athletic and therapeutic footwear ideal for each customer. And the affordable price in comparison with analogues gives a competitive advantage.
